We had just examined the body of Captain Felstorm, determined the murder to have been with a dagger, but made to look like claw marks, and discovered the murder weapon in Goldenfang’s quarters when Iron Maiden walked in. She didn’t believe Goldenfang was the murderer and believed his convulted story despite being the last (or second to last) person to see the captain alive.
We resolved to investigate the murder before someone else accused Goldenfang and Goldenfang wanted to find the missing werewolf Mr. Lupus as his absence was suspicious. Iron Maiden remarked she wasn’t even aware he had boarded the cruise at all. We made our way down to his quarters however they were empty and unused. Goldenfang bribed a goblin for the werewolf’s whereabouts and we were taken below to the lower storage decks to a metal horse-drawn carriage bearing the logo. We noted the carriage was empty, except for a small silver box and a few of Mr. Lupus’ belongings. The guys rifled through his journal, which mostly described his charity works and highlighted full moons. The night of the murder was a full moon, but the crime was far too subtle for a rampaging werewolf.
We returned to the main gathering of important people where Sandman decided to interview people to try to piece together a story, and Goldenfang questioned his “peers”. I opted to check the boat for Oni, which I could not sense anywhere near by, but I could sense Karakas on board, on the middle decks. I informed Benny who got the attention of Sandman and Goldenfang and we descended to confront the shapeshifter. As we entered the shopping district I realised Karakas had taken on the appearance of an Elf and his fiendish goons were Human-shaped. Karakas made us and bolted, I pursued. The moment Karakas had reached a window he had smashed his way out and made an escape, I could see in the water below some ripples where something had entered the water.
I returned to the band where they were battling with the fiends that I could recognise from the Blue Oyster bar. I lunged in, and helped dispatch the fiends who seems to fizzle and evaporate once killed with the power of a smite. Sandman had broadcast that we had discovered demons on board and not soon after some gladiators and Iron Maiden had entered the scene. The ship’s guards held us on account of the dead elf that had been caught in the crossfire and the fact that the demon’s bodies had evaporated, however witnesses corroborated our story and we were soon freed. I advised the party that Karakas had fled the ship and as such he probably didn’t have the control stones for the Dragon Turtles, he had likely shape shifted into some sort of red herring and swum for safety.
At this point I bemoaned about the fact we couldn’t just raise the Captain as a Wight and ask him who murdered him, which seemed to remind Sandman that he did actually know how to Raise the Dead back to life but didn’t have the diamond dust on hand. I did, so I supplied him with it. We went back to the Captain’s corpse. A more thorough examination gave us the realisation that the Captain was no longer in possession of his heart, which could complicate the spell. The band however decided that we did have a spare heart, from the Elf caught in the crossfire from earlier and an ample supply of Goblonium… so we gave them both to Mekk who designed something we could roughly describe as an acceptable organ transplant.
Armed with a magically unstable heart and the knowledge that a failed spell could include a large blast radius we set about casting the ritual. A long and arduous process but eventually we were rewarded… the Goblonium was visibly being pumped through the Captain’s veins and wounds were knitting closed, he didn’t look healthy, but all of a sudden he was breathing again.
He pointed out the fat goblin who Berb was acquainted with, the prize winner, and tried to find his axe. The Captain was adamant that the goblin murdered him. So Benny took the initiative and dominated the Goblin’s mind. Upon further inquiry it turns out the prize winning annoyance was actually a disguise and we were dealing with a professional assassin known as The Reaper who was hired by Ironhide to delay the boat and buy him some more time as his gladiator had a bye-week. We negotiated the Reaper’s release for some credit for future services.
Benny then dominated Ironhide and Ironhide’s chief gladiator for safety. Having Ironhide confess in front of Iron Maiden and the Captain to ensure Ironhide was correctly arrested and punishments were arranged. I believe arrangements were made for his own Gladiator (insulted at the prospect of cheating) to face him in a duel to the death in the pits.
The control stones were still missing, and some slight investigation lead us to Black Widow, who claimed she had stolen the stones to give us some time to look good, we were sceptical but the stones had been planted in Ironhide’s chambers.
Iron Maiden congratulated us on our rather metal Resurrection of the captain, and we returned to our voyage, and over the next few days we found out that we moved up to position 8 on the LiveWire Metal Rankings.
